Yesterday, we walked the Englisher Gardens here in Munchen. We found the famous spot where the surfers ride the waves where the river emerges from undergound tunnels and enters the park. Notice the "Surfers and Swimming Forbidden" sign :-)
Then we found our way to the Chinese Beer Garden there. It was about 62 degrees and hard-core sunbathers were out in the sun (nein kleidung....no clothes). Sorry, no pics. We also stopped in at the Hofbrauhaus and ate lunch, it is a must visit but not the best restaurant in Germany.
We had a wonderful night having dinner at a friends house here in Munchen. We didn't get back to the apartment till 12:30 (OK...late for us). We spoke about many things from politics to diet, health and the EU/US. That all on top of champagne and wine.....we all had such a good time, good food, great company!
Got up at 10am, and managed to pull myself together as we had to go and pick up our car down at SIXT. We had rented a BMW 3'er, but ended up with an X5. This thing is huge! Anyway we got on the autobahn and went to the Zeppelin museum in Friedrichshafen. Friedrichshafen is where the Zeppelins were made, on a floating platform out in Lake Bodensee. The museum is full of original artifacts from the full line of air ships, and they also have a full size model of a portion of the passenger area of the Hindenburg.
The Zeppelin musuem was neat and we had a good time. I lost Mark....and had to get them to page him. The lady at the counter was sehr lustig, and asked if I really wanted him back.....Ja, nach zweiundzwanzig jahren, bitte! He came out and we toured the museum together. The weather was cloudy so no great views of Switzerland across Lake Bodensee. We hopped back on the highway and made our way home.
TOP SPEED on the Autobahn today: 211 KMH / 131 MPH. (Our last trip in June 2008 we hit 238 KMH / 148 MPH and that was in a Mercedes E Class). Today in the unlimited speed areas we cruised consistently around 180 KMH / 112 MPH. The BMW X5, although a big SUV, had no trouble reaching and holding this speed. And we did get passed a few times. Once we were holding at 200 KMH / 124 MPH, and another BMW came by and left us behind at a rapid pace. We just watched him disappear in front of us. Here are a few pics that Pat took while we were driving. They really do not do the scenery justice however. It was much more beautiful in person. The first one is an unusual suspension bridge.
