What a wonderful day this has been!
We started the day with a trip to Castle (Schloss) Herrenchiemsee. It is on an island in Lake Chiemsee, and was built between 1878 and 1885. This is the last of the 3 castles built by King Ludwig II. He built it as a tribute to French Sun King Louis XIV, and it was modeled after the Palace of Versailles. An interesting fact is that some of the rooms here no longer exist at Versailles, as when the French Monachy fell Versailles was sacked, therefore this is more complete. He died before this castle was finished, and only 20 of the 70 rooms were completed.
We have now visited all of King Ludwig's palaces and castles.
Nymphenburg Palace (Where he was born)
Hohenschwangau (where he lived most of his youth)
Neuschwanstein (The castle Walt Disney made famous)
Linderhof (Where he lived most of his adult life)
and Herrenchiemsee
Also, while we were in Prien in the parking lot for the boat ferry to the island, we met an Austrian couple who had 2 Scottish Terriers with them. They were both female and black. We stopped and spoke with them and told them we also have 2 Scotties, and we showed them pictures on Pat's phone. They enjoyed seeing our pictures as much as we enjoyed running into them. Here is a picture of them.
In the afternoon we were given a great surprise when the owners of our apartment (Josef and Gabrielle Hubbman) invited us out to dinner. They took us out to their favorite local restaurant (Gasthaus) which they have been going to for many years. It was 20 minutes outside Munich, and the drive through the country and small villages was beautiful. We have had many conversations with them and we enjoy learning about German customs from them, and they enjoy sharpening their English skills. They have known the cook and his family for many years. The food was fabulous and we had such a wonderful evening. What a special event to be invited by them out to dinner, and to take us to one of their private favorite places. It was a very special evening.
